This record group contains Resolutions for the City of Savannah from 1905 through 1932. According to Black's Law Dictionary (1990) a resolution denotes something less formal than an ordinance; generally it is a mere expression of opinion of council concerning some matter of administration and provides for disposition of a particular item of administrative business of a municipality. Black indicates that a resolution is used whenever the legislative body passing it wishes merely to express an opinion as to some given matter or thing and is only to have a temporary effect on some particular thing. The resolutions are arranged chronologically [and] were issued by the different committees as well as individual aldermen. The subjects of these resolutions include: authorization to purchase livestock, land for street openings and paving, authorization for pension rates, invitations to organizations to hold their conventions in Savannah, appropriation of funds for the City Bacteriologist (to atttend national meetings and to conduct testing locally for syphilis, influenza, etc.), uniforms for firemen and policemen, equipment purchases for different city departments, raising of the American flag over City Hall, construction on the Municipal Auditorium, etc.
